Types of Opal

Mariora only sells only Solid and Natural Opal

SOLID OPALS      Genuine solid opal is a gemstone cut from one piece of natural material. There are basically three types of opals.

Black Opals - A precious opal any colour of the rainbow which naturally forms on black or grey natural (potch) common opal back. It is usually darker and deeper in colour. Price Range: US$50.00 to US$30,000 per carat.

Queensland Boulder Opals - A precious opal any colour of the rainbow formed on natural ironstone rock. It is usually darker and deeper in colour. Price Range US$50.00 to US$7000 per carat.

White Opals - A precious opal any colour of the rainbow. It is usually milky white or light, sometimes transparent (crystal) in appearance.

OPAL DOUBLETS

A doublet is a piece of opal on top of a darker backing which is attached to a highlight colour. Doublets are not always readily available. They are really made to imitate genuine black opal or Queensland boulder opal.

OPAL TRIPLETS

These consist of a very fine slice of opal, as thin as cigarette paper, cemented between a clear reflective top and a black back. These tops are mostly glass or plastic. The black back is designed to enhance the colour. Even though triplets can be very pretty, they are not stable for a long period of time. Triplets imitate genuine black opal.
